So, you’ve got your hair extensions lengths and are all ready and excited to try our luscious tape-in hair extensions out for yourself. But wait… how exactly are you supposed to care for them to make sure they last longer? Don’t worry, we’ve got your back with a much-needed checklist for all our beloved Luisant hair babes who are new to hair extensions lengths — tape-ins to be particular!

As one would expect, extra hair means extra hair care, especially if it’s not your natural hair that you’re dealing with! Since hair extensions are taped on and not connected to your scalp, the hair can’t be naturally nourished by your body. Not to mention, tape-in extensions involve long-term commitment — we’re talking months — it’s imperative to treat them extra good to get the best use out of them.

Here are some tips to help you make your tape-in hair extensions retain their quality so you can reuse and re-tape them for a longer time!

• Make sure to keep your hair extensions bag untangled and clean — don’t be afraid to wash them and brush them regularly with appropriate tools!

• While you should be brushing and washing your extensions, make sure that you DO NOT brush them while they’re wet.

• Invest in a wet brush or a hair extension brush — this is the best tool you can buy for your extensions! Brush your hair extensions several times a day with a wet brush, making sure to hold your hair at the root to avoid tension near the tape.

• Going to bed with wet hair extensions isn’t the best idea. Make sure to dry your hair and braid it before going to sleep to avoid waking up with tangles.

• If you plan on heat-styling your extensions, don’t forget to use a hair-protectant. Remember, the more the heat, the shorter the life span of your tape-ins!

• Another thing to remember before using flat irons or heat-styling tools is to never use them directly on your tape tabs — it weakens the tape bonds and might make them slip out.

• If you work out or take a swim with your extensions lengths in, make sure to clean out the sweat and chlorine thoroughly.

• Conditioning your extensions is important but make sure that you DO NOT apply conditioner on your scalp when wearing tape-in extensions — start mid-shaft to the ends. This also goes for when you apply oils and serums to your hair — keep them away from the scalp to avoid contact with the tape. Also, opt for natural oils like coconut oil and use it sparingly on the ends to keep them looking healthy and shiny!

• When using hair products, make sure to use them sparingly as mentioned above — too much product can cause unwanted build-up that can in turn cause tangling and breakage. Also, steer clear of applying products that include alcohol and oils directly to the scalp to avoid the tapes from sliding out. Sulphate free shampoos and hair products will be your best friends!

• Don’t lighten your hair extensions! If you really want to switch the look up, you can go up to two shades darker, but never light if you want your extensions to remain in prime condition.

• Make sure to visit your stylist every 6–10 weeks to get your tape-in extensions or clip in bangs refreshed and reapplied.
